What drone (UAV) surveying can and cannot replace in a modern survey workflow.

Drone surveying has gone from novelty to standard tool in under a decade. It is genuinely useful but it is a complement to traditional survey methods, not a replacement for them.

What a drone survey actually produces

An RTK-enabled mapping drone flies a pre-planned grid over a site, capturing overlapping photographs that are processed into an orthomosaic (a distortion-corrected aerial photo map) and a digital surface model. From there, contours, volumes and area calculations can be derived across the whole site at once, rather than point by point.

Where drones outperform ground methods

Large, open sites quarries, agricultural land, large developments, corridor studies are where drones save the most time, because coverage that would take days on foot can be flown in a single session, at a resolution ground methods would take far longer to match.

Where they do not

Legal boundary points still need to be surveyed to cadastral accuracy on the ground a drone orthomosaic is not a substitute for a beacon observation. Dense vegetation, tall buildings and areas needing millimetre-level precision (structural monitoring, precise setting-out) are still ground-survey territory, usually with GNSS RTK or a total station.

How the two fit together

On most larger projects, a drone survey establishes the wide-area context quickly, while ground survey methods handle the points that carry legal or engineering precision requirements. Used together, they cover a site faster and more completely than either method alone.
